How Fuel Water Separators Can Help Avoid Dangerous Effects of Contamination?

Fuel water separators are very important for today’s diesel generators and engines that have a high-pressure pump installed between delivery pumps and fuel injectors. This is a serious investment you shouldn’t neglect to gain additional pre-fuel filter protection and enhance performance.

It is great preventive maintenance equipment that filters out more than the standard fuel filter and removes contamination. Bad fuel can create a worse scenario for a generator as it will choke off the engine, gum up the mechanism, and harm the performance. The answer to this problem is Fuel Water Separator.

How Dangerous it could be to have Water in Your Fuel?

Do you know condensation present in your diesel engine could get into the fuel mechanism and lead to contamination risks? When the tank cools down, humid air gets sucked back into the tank and further water condenses on the cool tank walls.

Having water in your fuel can pose the following dangers:

  1. Rust – When water gets combined with steel and iron, it causes dust. Small particles of rust can cause wear and tear of parts and may lead to failures.
  2. Corrosion – Acid-combined water in the fuel can destroy both ferrous and non-ferrous metals. The situation can be even worse when abrasion is exposed to fresh metal surfaces.
  3. Microbial growth – The water increases microbial growth, which can make your fuel dirty and acids that can damage the tank and fuel system.
  4. Pitting – Water flashes on hot metal parts can cause pitting on several components.
  5. Difficult to start – Contaminated diesel can damage the injection system which causes difficulty in starting the engine.

How do Fuel Water Separators work?

Diesel naturally carries more impurities than standard petrol, hence damaging the Diesel Generator internals. While OEM filter does its job of filtering a huge amount of fuel contaminants, it has certain restrictions and is considered ineffective against water and other particles.

This is where Fuel Water Separator comes to the rescue to protect the Diesel Generator’s fuel system by filtering water and other particulates from the fuel before it enters the fuel filter to ensure only a clean and pure fuel reaches the engine.

Why Install Fuel Water Separators?

Water Contamination

Water contamination in your generator’s fuel system can be harmful to engine health. When hazardous particles reach the engine, it can cause several problems, such as corrosion of metal parts, increase micro-bacterial growth, and decrease durability and performance levels. This is where the fuel water separator works as a purpose-built filter that is used to isolate and gather water before it harms the fuel delivery components.

Water Separation

When a fuel water separator is installed, it becomes a central point of contact for all sorts of fuel from the diesel generator fuel tank. The fuel water separator has two stages:

  • Coalescer Stage causes small water droplets to merge and form bulk water.

This bulk water being heavier than Diesel gravitates to the lowest section of the housing and can be drained off easily.

  • Separator Stage prevents any water to escape from the Diesel Water Separator housing since the Separator only allows Diesel to flow out and repels water.

Conclusively, fuel water separators are the best choice to keep your generator’s engine in a good condition. It offers you easy access when inspecting and draining the water trap. It allows you to filter out microbial bugs, dirt, and other substances.
